Wilbert, the Pot
Belly Pig
Wilbert
came to live on our farm just before Christmas 2007. A family had
surrendered him to the local Humane Society. The story starts with me doing
some last minute Christmas shopping while Rich was at the airport picking up
his sister, Jean, who was spending the holiday with us.
While grocery
shopping I received a call from Beth asking me to pick up a pig at the
humane society. OK, no problem. So I finished the grocery
shopping and thought, I'll get the pig and run to Wal-Mart and head home.
So I picked up the pig and man, he was soo adorable!
How quickly
that changed when he pooped in the van (he was in a pet carrier) while I
picked up pot belly pig chow at the local farm store and had to explain to
the poor guy loading the feed bags why my van smelt like a pig pen! I
couldn't stand the smell so Wal-Mart would have to wait. I called Rich
to let him know of about the "extra" shopping I did and that the real
shopping was ending as the van stunk to bad for me to continue. He
laughed until he remembered I was driving his van (I "forgot" to tell him
that the pig was in a carrier, hehe).
Anyway, I
didn't know what to do with him once I got him home. So.. being the
city slicker I am.. the bathtub seemed the logical place to put a dirty pig.
I let him walk out of the carrier into the tub. Since he was dirty, I rinsed
him off. I thought, job well done, Carol, a clean pig in a bath tub,
easy enough, now you just have to wait for Rich.
Now you would
think it wouldn't be that hard to keep a 40 pound pig in a tub... HAHA.. not
so. The smart little guy got comfy real quick and started jumping out
of the tub... Now keep in mind.. I am a city girl, I've never picked up a
pig in my life. Just so you know, pigs don't especially like being
picked up. Oh man.. I couldn't wait for Rich to get home.
I had Wilbert
home for about an hour (that was a very long hour) before Rich and Jean
arrived... first thing I heard was "WOW... smells like pig crap in here."
We let him out of the tub and closed the bathroom door while we decided just
where we were going to put him. I now have pig hoof marks on the bathroom
door since Wilbert doesn't care for closed doors. We decided to let
him run in the house and he was very happy to check everything out.
Shortly thereafter, Rich took him to the farm and placed him in my chicken
coop.
And so began
our journey with Wilbert, the pot belly pig.
