 2008 First Chicks Hatched Photos

    New Chicks

Madison put 14 eggs in the incubator at the farm.  We only had 2 laying hens at the time, Clara (americana) and Lucky (white crested black polish), and 2 roosters, Percy (cross) and Mr. Frizzle (white frizzle).  So we knew we'd get some sort of cross of the 4 chickens.
10 eggs hatched, 5 Clara and 5 Lucky.  The other 4 eggs were not fertile when Carol candled them.  One of the Clara chicks died after a few days.

Lucky's chicks are funny looking as the crested gene carries thru but not much as they have just a few feathers on their heads.  Clara's chicks are a beautiful golden color.  We are assuming that Percy is Dad as Mr. Frizzle is small and Percy keeps a close eye on his "ladies" chasing poor Mr. Frizzle away.
