    2008 layers arrived 3-9-08

Our first chickens of the 2008 season were scheduled to arrive on 2-25-08 but I received a call from the hatchery that they would instead be arriving on 3-10-08.   Imagine my surprise when the phone rings Sunday am (3-9-08) with the Post Office saying I can get my chicks a day early if I want.  He didn't have to asked twice.

So off we went and got an even noisier box then last year from the Post Office.  We got a box ready for them and started dipping beaks.  They were definitely thirsty and hungry after their overnight trip from Iowa to Minnesota.  We have 30 rainbow layers and 8 White Crested Black Polish chicks.  I had ordered 25 rainbow layers, which is just a mix of pullets that lay many different colored eggs.  Madison wanted the crested chicks for a breeding pen for 4H so we ordered 5 hens and 2 roosters (they sent 1 extra male) so hopefully she will have 1 rooster and 2 hens for the fair.

Oh, the wait.. hurry Postman! This box is very noisy. It is sooo hard to wait.. 38 chicks in a box

    less then 24 hours old

eating and drinking on their own

    It looks like everyone
    is doing great.

Until.. Rich resets the light and finds one chick in trouble.

One of my red cochin bantam chicks was cold, jerking and had its eyes closed.

    one last chick

The poor little chickie was so cold it was shivering.

I grabbed a reading light in Madison's room for warming and made a little ICU bed for chickie out of a cool whip container and pink towel.  Madison started dipping its beak in water every 5 minutes.

In less then an hour, chickie was chirping away and ready to head back with the other chicks.

    ready to go back
    with the others

welcome to chicken ICU personal warming light
