2009 Bees: Setting Up The Hives

    Bee Hives 2009

This year, I debated on whether or not to add bee hives to our land.  They would surely be a great benefit and many years ago, Richard Sr. (Rich's dad) had bees here.  In fact, there are bits and pieces of the hives in one of the groves.
Rich is allergic to bees so IF we did raise bees, it would be my responsibility.  I have too many things on my platter already, so I waited to make my decision.  Then, Karen L. reminded that we have friends who do bee keeping.

So... on April 11, 2009 our bee hives arrived at the farm.  And I don't have to care for them!  I get to just sit back and learn.
And hopefully, not get stung!  LOL  The hives are set up by a pond so they are not close to the homestead.

Here's some pictures of them setting things up.  Rich took these.

Here are the bees, ready for their new homes. Last year's honeycomb will help feed the hive until spring arrives..

6 hives total The queen is in the box.

Some sugar water allows the bees to stay inside the hives until things warm up around here.

Is NASA here?  No, it's just the beekeepers.

In just a few hours after the hives were set into place, we had bees visiting the farm site.  It was kind of nice to see.
